MYOG backpacking diaper bag

When thru hiking the GDT with Toothless, we used the DCF bag that came with our Duplex as a diaper bag. It was light, water resistant. We had it in our closet. I was sold!

Did it work well?

It actually worked quite well.

A diaper bag is used several times a day.

It needs to be water resistant so you can place it down on damp ground and not have moisture seep into the dry diapers.

It needs to hold diapers.

Not a terribly complicated job.

What could be improved?

Since we used it several times a day, I was constantly opening and closing it.

DCF isn’t the most durable when it’s folded constantly. The drawstring closure started to fray and fail.

The bag itself wasn’t taped, so it wasn’t fully water proof. The sewn seams started pulling out and moisture finds it’s way in. Obviously, it’s a stuff sack, so it’s not water proof. But DCF should resist sitting on some water.

The bag was a hair too small. It would be better if it was an inch or two longer.

What did I come up with?

I got some 0.67 clear DCF for our tent floor project.

I used the scraps, with some 40D ripstop nylon with PU coating, to make a diaper bag that addressed the issues.

I made the collar of the ripstop nylon, so the closure wouldn’t fray.

I made it taller by a few inches.

I taped all seams with DCF tape, including the inside of the ripstop nylon seams.

The entire bag weighs 14 gm with the drawstring.
