Our previous throw bag was a dark green zipper pouch with fairly thick reflective line. I used it on occasion, but it was heavy and fairly small – I couldn’t fit very large rocks in it, so I was quite limited.
In an effort to improve our gear for some pending time on the PCT, I wanted to address the throw bag. My requirements
- The throw bag needs to be light enough that I don’t have to question bringing it.
- The throw bag would contain 2 mm guy line that I could use as a replacement tent guy line in a pinch (same size line as our tent uses).
- The throw bag would be large enough to hold the rope, but also rocks of various shapes and sizes in case a hang is needed.
- The throw bag should be visible
What I made
I used some 40D ripstop nylon to make the bag. I know this might end up with holes if the rock is snaggy, but it doesn’t have to finish the trail without holes.
I used some scrap webbing we cut off of Natasha’s running shorts, and a titanium D ring to clip the carabiner to.
The bag is closed with 1.8 mm line.
The bag is kept closed when full and throwing with a loop of 1/4″ gossgrain that the carabiner can also clip through.
The entire thing is meant for a PCT hang. I am buying 50 ft of 2 mm Lawson Equipment glowire to use as the line.
The bag weighs 6 gm without the carabiner.
