PCT 2025 Day 85: water, sweet water

Last night wasn’t the best sleep. It got windy. It was hot.  I was very thirsty. I woke up tired and thirsty then made the bad decision to wait on coffee. I figured having water would be a more versatile idea than coffee – the kids can’t drink the coffee – and I could make coffee at the water source in like 4 miles.

It was a hard start. We broke camp quickly and got started when it was cool but I was fighting myself all morning. I fell on loose ground a couple times while carrying Lil Flier. Once while hiking and once while scooping water at a water source before the Joshua Spring. Both times I landed on my butt so no real issues with falling but it was frustrating.

The water at Joshua Spring was alright. It was cool but that just meant I got bitten by bugs. It was a steep climb back to trail in the sun.

I did make coffee though and having water and having coffee improved how I felt. And it was a touch cooler than yesterday.

We saw a lot of other hikers today.

We got water at the next creek and then went past it a bit to find a camp spot. Our spot is near dry grass, so everything is covered in dry poky grass. And it’s pretty sloped. But the tree gave us some shade and we have some wind shelter.

Tonight I pitched the tent. I didn’t want to get blasted with wind and dry grass in my face all night. And besides we need to get in the habit of using the tent more. We might need to.  I also wanted to try out a few changes I made to the floor in town. Minor but the floor used shock cord to gather two of the long edges of the bathtub – it’s been like this since we started. I used DCF tape to improve it by adding a loop in a different spot and give a channel for the cord.

I’m using our packs to keep Secret and I on the bed. I’ll probably roll off tonight. I’m not looking forward to it
