I'm not a fan of Banff on the GDT south of Whistling Pass. Whistling Pass and Ball Pass are fun. I really like Height of the Rockies and think that the South Kanakasis Pass Alt should be the official route. This even blows a bunch of the following Banff trails away. Assiniboine is lovely but … Continue reading GDT Section C Reflection

GDT Section B Reflection
The wildfire smoke has impacted many of the views. This makes this section less enjoyable. The HRT (High Rock Trail) is awesome and is a great replacement for the ATV road. It's well designed and nice to walk. The campsites are sometimes oddly spaced. People love to break the rules and ride motorized vehicles where … Continue reading GDT Section B Reflection
GDT Section A Reflection
We are often surprised at how big of days we can do with Toothless with only minor frustrations! Toothless just gets tired at about 5pm. We have to limit hiking to before 4:30pm if possible. If we do, then he generally is in a great mood and likes exploring camp. Bedtime has been challenging a … Continue reading GDT Section A Reflection
GDT Day 31 – I need a shower and a burger
Mileage: 21.8 km I haven't had a shower in like 10 days. I haven't had good cooked food in like 22 days (I don't consider the smokies at Boulton Creek Trading Post to count). Despite the beautiful day today and overall good mood of the day I just really need a small break. I'm looking … Continue reading GDT Day 31 – I need a shower and a burger
GDT Day 30 – Bravefart
Mileage: 19.4km Floe Lake was still enveloped in clouds when we woke in the morning, so despite no more rain overnight, there was plenty of moisture still in the air. Toothless' diapers were slightly less wet, but not anywhere close to dry, so we would be crossing our fingers we would hike above the cloud … Continue reading GDT Day 30 – Bravefart
GDT Day 29 – that’s too much man…
Mileage: 21.2 km It's not the mileage that's too much. It's just ... the day. So much has happened today I struggle to keep my head straight. We started getting a sprinkle of rain last night at dinner. I was cautiously optimistic. Then when the sprinkle turned into a downpour after we tucked into bed … Continue reading GDT Day 29 – that’s too much man…
GDT Day 28 – Finally getting to the good stuff
Mileage: 15.4km + 9.0 bonus km for Natasha We were the first ones up this morning and took full advantage of the large picnic table, but it wasn't too long until the "Lesser Divide Trail" group arrived as well as the couple with the dog, so we tried to minimize our overflow. It took a … Continue reading GDT Day 28 – Finally getting to the good stuff
GDT Day 27 – hey do you know….
Mileage: 20.5 km (1.1 km from Porcupine to GDT, 10.9 km GDT to Sunshine Alt, 3.0 km Sunshine Alt , 3.6 km GDT to Healy Creek Trail, 1.9 km Healy Creek Trail) Porcupine to Healy Creek We woke at around 6am today finally rested and recovered from the poor sleep from the past day. Toothless … Continue reading GDT Day 27 – hey do you know….
GDT Day 26 – A mixed bag
Mileage: 25.1km Last night was pretty rough with Toothless waking 3 or 4 times rather than his usual 1-2. So this morning when he started to rouse, I was hoping he would settle on his own for at least another 30 minutes or so even though an early start would be ideal with a relatively … Continue reading GDT Day 26 – A mixed bag
GDT Day 25 – A Connector Day
Mileage: 19.3 km I'd say my highlight of today was our conversation during breakfast with Steve and his son Owen. Those two are great fun and just a pleasure to talk to at camp. I think we were very fortunate to meet them. Other than that, there's not much to say about today. It's basically … Continue reading GDT Day 25 – A Connector Day
